22 Million Americans Work for Government!

22,500,000 of our fellow countrymen work for the government, ie. the taxpayers. That’s more than work in construction, farming, fishing, forestry, manufacturing, mining and utilities combined! And, it’s 3 times as many government employees as there were 50 years ago.

How can a system sustain itself that keeps expanding the public sector work force?  Don’t think too hard, it’s a rhetorical question – IT CAN’T! But here’s an even scarier thought… What if these folks were allowed to form unions and collectively bargain, ie. hold the rest of us over a barrel? Thank goodness we aren’t stupid enough to allow that. Oh, wait…

Work for Welfare, What a Crazy Idea

Nothing like a budget crisis to get bureaucrats to actually use their heads. In today’s, “Well, yeah, duh!” moment, the New York Daily News reports, that NY City and the Mass Transit Authority have decided people who get welfare checks and/or unemployment benefits, should maybe do something to earn their hand-out. They are planning to put recipients to work cleaning subway cars in exchange for their money.

Imagine that, people actually earning their keep; what a novel concept. You don’t suppose people might be more likely to get a job when the government money stops being free do you? While we’re at it, I can think of some litter that needs picking up, some streets that need sweeping, some cemeteries that need mowing; I could go on all day. But don’t misunderstand, I’m not complaining; this is a nice first step. Congrats to those who proposed it.

Of course, good luck getting it through. I can already hear the City Councilor of minority descent calling it slavery or racism… or both.

Even FDR Was Against Public Sector Unions

As Quinn Hillyer points out in the Washington Times, even Franklin Roosevelt, the patriarch of the proggressive liberal left ruining America today and a huge supporter of unions, knew that government employees unionizing was a terrible idea that would have dreadful consequences. You aren’t going to believe what this raging liberal said on the subject! I’ve bolded my favorite phrase. Read on…

[M]eticulous attention should be paid to the special relationships and obligations of public servants to the public itself and to the Government.

All Government employees should realize that the process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service. It has its distinct and insurmountable limitations when applied to public personnel management. The very nature and purposes of Government make it impossible for administrative officials to represent fully or to bind the employer in mutual discussions with Government employee organizations. The employer is the whole people, who speak by means of laws enacted by their representatives in Congress. Accordingly, administrative officials and employees alike are governed and guided, and in many instances restricted, by laws which establish policies, procedures, or rules in personnel matters.

And what of the hystrionics employed by the Wisconsin teachers union in an attempt to game the system and keep getting overly generous pay and benefits, the recession, the budget shortfall and the economic health of their fellow Wisconsinites be damned? His position on that behavior is clear as well…

Particularly, I want to emphasize my conviction that militant tactics have no place in the functions of any organization of government employees.

Upon employees in the Federal service rests the obligation to serve the whole people, whose interests and welfare require orderliness and continuity in the conduct of Government activities. This obligation is paramount. Since their own services have to do with the functioning of the Government, a strike of pubic employees manifests nothing less than an intent on their part to prevent or obstruct the operations of Government until their demands are satisfied. Such action, looking toward the paralysis of Government by those who have sworn to support it, is unthinkable and intolerable.

When FDR disagrees with your position you need not wonder, you have moved left of left to the point of falling off the political map.

Do As I Say, Not As I Do

Congressman Anthony Weiner of New York was perhaps the most aggressive and vitriolic supporter of Obamacare during the months-long debate on the bill. So, imagine my surprise when he announced that now, as a candidate for Mayor of New York City (Heaven help them!), he believes the city should seek a waiver from the legislation.

Ok, so liberal hypocrisy knows no bounds; that is not exactly news. But to scream and rant on the house floor in defense of the legislation and then 12 months later seek to take America’s largest city off the plan you just crammed down the throats of the American people who were adamantly against it; that’s a new low even for Rep. Weiner.

For those keeping track, there are now more than 1,250 organizations who have received exemptions from some or all of the legislations requirements (a complete list can be found here). Apparently Rep. Weiner has finally caught on to what all these organizations already knew; this one’s so bad, you’ve got to get out of it any way you can.

*A special note for those wondering where I’ve been for these past many months. In my first attempt to blog about these issues, I became too focused on writing style – trying to emmulate op-ed pieces and write lengthy entries. You probably don’t want to read something that long, and writing it became too much of a chore. My goal going forward will be to just speak my mind. Sometimes that will be short and sweet or even just a link and a comment; sometimes it will be more. I look forward to hearing what you think as it develops.

Did I Wake Up in Wonderland?

Stories from the last handful of days leave me so dumbfounded that I can only come to the conclusion that I must have woken up in Wonderland, or on another planet, or in an alternate universe. Something has to explain the lunacy of these news stories; it can’t be that we’re just this dumb as a nation. Can it?

NAACP Mourns Loss of KKK Member Robert Byrd – “…[Byrd] went from being an active member of the KKK to a being a stalwart supporter of the Civil Rights Act…” Uh, no, NAACP, you better check the Congressional Record again. This racist Democrat filibustered the Civil Rights Act for 3 months in 1964 and voted against the Voting Rights Act in 1965.

70 Days Later, Obama Finally Accepts Foreign Help with Oil SpillHaving been offered assistance in the first week of the disaster by numerous countries, it took this imbecile TEN WEEKS to realize we might need some help on this one! You can’t make up that level of stupidity; you just can’t. This acceptance of assistance still doesn’t include the world’s largest oil skimmer from Taiwan. It sits in port in Louisiana because the EPA is afraid the water it puts back might still have some oil in it?!?!? Umm, oh never mind, that’s too ignorant for me to even comment on.

Venezuela Seizes U.S. Company’s Oil RigsRather than pay the $43 million they owe this American company, Hugo Chavez’s government is just taking their drilling rights and equipment, so far without compensation. The Obama administration is very upset about this abuse of American citizens and their financial interests – they’ve released a statement.

Academics Say Obama Better President Than Reagan – Forget that he’s only been on the job 18 months and has failed to accomplish anything, save ballooning the federal debt, or that he’s currently failing (heck, not even trying) to handle the largest ecological disaster this country has ever seen. Nope these nitwits are ready to declare him a top 15 President of all time. Now here’s the scary part – THESE PEOPLE TEACH!

Nancy Pelosi Says Unemployment Checks are Fastest Way to Create Jobs – “It creates jobs faster than almost any other initiative you can name.” No, Nancy, it doesn’t, and anyone who’s taken 6th grade civics can explain why not to you so please ask!

Obama Says Borders Can’t Be Sealed“Our borders are just too vast for us to be able to solve the problem only with fences and border patrols. It won’t work.” Call me crazy, Mr. President, but I think we just might have been able to swing a fence for SEVEN HUNDRED EIGHTY SEVEN BILLION DOLLARS! In fact, I bet some Americans would have appreciated the jobs building the fence and there might even have been a few bucks left over.
Unfortunately, I am on earth, and all of this ignorance happened in a single week in June, 2010. The lame stream media ignored the real stories here, and the American people continued to bury their heads in the sand while their country is yanked out from underneath them. Can you imagine what will be in next week’s news?

Newsflash, Arizona Doesn’t Border Mexico!

It is such a good thing that there is video footage of this, because without it, no one would believe a public official, in this case a Milwaukee County Supervisor, could possibly be this ignorant. Watch the video as Peggy West speaks in support of the City of Milwaukee boycotting Arizona. Her reasoning? Since Arizona doesn’t border Mexico it’s unreasonable of them to be complaining about a problem with too many illegals. Care to guess which party she’s with?

I assume that once she discovered her geographical error, having already committed herself that if a state like Texas that DID border Mexico felt this way, she would be compelled to reconsider her position, she voted against the boycott. Alas, that would be way too logical for someone this dense. I can only conclude with a sincere plea: If you are this stupid, please, PLEASE, PLEASE, don’t run for public office; and to the electorate, if someone who couldn’t pass a 3rd grade geography quiz does manage to get on the ballot, in the name of all that is holy, don’t vote for them!

What Happens When the Government Teat Runs Dry?

Things like this…

and this…

What are these violent protests about? The Greek government is bankrupt, and the European Union and the International Monetary Fund are going to bail them out to the tune of $968 billion (your welcome). As a stipulation to that bailout, those organizations are demanding that the Greek government cut its out of control expenditures – namely exorbitant pay to government workers (half of all people employed in Greece are employed by the government!) This makes perfect sense; after all, it is the current level of spending that got Greece into this mess, so why would anyone loan them money if they planned to keep spending at these levels? But the government workers and their unions don’t want to hear it. They expect the mother’s milk of government dollars to keep flowing forever. Socialism has trained them to look to their government for their survival rather than to themselves, and they are terrified at the prospect of even the slightest reduction in their allotted handouts.

This scene is coming to America, and it’s coming soon! Margaret Thatcher famously said, “The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.” That has happened in Greece, and it will happen here. Moody’s Investor Service has recently said that U.S. could lose its AAA credit rating as soon as 2013 if current trends continue. The welfare spending, cushy government pensions, union protected government jobs with exorbitant benefits, bailouts for homeowners who make stupid buying decisions, unemployment benefit extensions to two years and beyond… it’s all going away when the Government teat runs dry. When that happens we will have tens of millions of American citizens with no idea how to care for themselves or function in a real world, and they will quite literally go bezerk like their government dependent cousins in Greece.

The next time someone tells you that conservatives are mean or don’t have compassion for their fellow man, remember Greece. It is not compassionate to create dependent citizens who know no other way to survive but to suckle at the government teat. That is perhaps the least compassionate thing a government can do, for it is a virtual certainty that eventually that teat will run dry.

Another $10.6 billion for Freddie Mac

Update: A week after Freddie announces their loss of $8 billion sister Fannie Mae comes out with a 1st quarter loss of more than $13 billion! These two companies that Barney Frank swore were financially sound have burned through another $21 billion of your money in  just 3 months folks!

Its operations having lost another $8 billion in the first quarter of 2010, Freddie Mac is back at the TARP trough for more of our tax dollars. This time the tab will be $10.6 billion, but they’re bound to lose money in Q2 and for the foreseeable future, so expect them to come begging for even more very soon.

Overall this will put the federal government’s total bailout of Freddie Mac at $60 billion. Tack on another $76 billion to date for Fannie Mae’s bailout, and that’s $136 billion and counting to rescue these two organizations. Barney Frank (D-MA) must be absolutely stunned because here he is in 2003, when the Bush Administration was asking for stronger regulations, saying Fannie and Freddie would never fail, and if they did, THE GOVERNMENT WOULD NEVER BAIL THEM OUT!

Wrong again Barney!

Puerto Rican Statehood, Now Why Would Democrats Do That?

Having passed the wildly unpopular health care bill through all methods of chicanery, the Democratic leadership in Congress now wants to legalize 12-15 million illegal immigrants currently residing in the U.S. and force (more on that in a minute) the island of Puerto Rico with its population of 4 million to become the 51st state. This will result in 16-19 million additional uninsured Americans which the rest of us will immediately begin buying health insurance for; along with the full allotment of other welfare benefits, Social Security, Medicare, education, etc., etc., etc. Now why would the Democrats do that?

Well, this doesn’t take a rocket scientist to answer – 19 million mostly poorly educated, low wage earning, not politically savvy new citizens; I wonder which party they would vote for? But, in the case of Puerto Rico it gets even better. As you know, each state gets two Senators and Puerto Rico would immediately elect two more Democrats to that body. In the House of Representatives the seats are capped at 435 and divided among the states based on population. The redistributing would result in Puerto Rico gaining 7 or 8 seats and other states losing that number. Two new Senators and 7 – 8 House seats guaranteed to go to the Democrats; considering that 1 vote in the Senate and 3 in the House were the difference between passage and failure of Health Care reform it becomes immediately apparent the stakes we’re talking here!

But, here’s the best part… Puerto Rico doesn’t even want to be a state. The people of Puerto Rico have overwhelmingly voted against it 3 times, including twice in the 90’s. Perhaps you’re thinking, ‘Well what’s the problem then, they’ll just vote against it again’. If only it were that simple, but as James Simpson explains here, this time the game has been rigged and if HR 2499 passes it will push the citizens of Puerto Rico into a process that will virtually force statehood upon them. Even members of their own party don’t like their tactics on this one. Democrat Congressman Luis Gutierrez shares his opinion of the shenanigans here.

The Democrats can’t pass their agenda (Health Care, Cap ‘n Trade, etc.) without trampling on the Constitution to get around those pesky citizens. Now it looks like they will lose most if not all of their majority in Congress come November. They are running out of time, so they have settled on a new plan. Use the power they have for the next 6 months to manipulate the make-up of the future electorate to ensure their retention of or return to power. Nineteen million welfare addicted new voters should do the trick.

Representation Without Taxation Doesn’t Work Either

Today being tax day, it seems a good time to remind ourselves of some key figures. Most Americans give at least a cursory look at their household budget monthly as they pay their bills or perhaps weekly if they’re in the tough position of living paycheck-to-paycheck. But, few stop to review their country’s financial state even once a year. Perhaps that should become a tradition on tax day. After all, Americans would call their cell phone provider and dispute a $10 unexplained charge; so why do they continue to pay thousands each year without asking why or where it’s going?

So here it is, the federal budget for the next ten years, as laid out by President Obama. Be sure to note, it is displayed in billions of dollars.

Allow me to round some figures off in summation: This year, the federal government will take in $2.2 trillion while spending $3.7 trillion (a $1.5 trillion deficit on top of the existing $11 trillion federal debt). Notice they expect the best year in the next ten, 2014, to still be a net loss of $706 billion, even if some wild optimism on Washington’s part comes to fruition.

This is the equivalent of an American family that earns $100,000 per year spending $168,000 while carrying $600,000 in debt; writing IOUs for the $68,000, and planning to do the same thing each of the next ten years and beyond. None of us would do that, so I can’t believe there’s a person in this country dumb enough to think the government’s numbers work, but there is. In fact, there are millions of them. A few of these work in the Lame Stream Media and will go on TV tonight and deride their fellow citizens who are at rallies all over the country today protesting this very spending lunacy, even though it seems the protesters are the only ones paying attention.

But how can millions of people who think the government’s budgetary suicide is ok? Well, that’s easy – 47% of all Americans pay NO FEDERAL INCOME TAX! Put simply, these people have no skin in the game. They are too short-sighted to realize that at the very least, their kids might some day have to pay this bill; or much worse, that a financial default by this country will mean financial pain for all – especially those who currently live off the taxpayer’s largess. Still, come election day, they have the same voting power as those footing the bill, and therein lies the problem. As Ben Franklin so accurately said, “When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.”

Taxation without representation was cause for a Declaration and War of Independence. Turns out representation without taxation doesn’t work so well either.
